Mange

Mange is a skin infection caused by tiny insects living under the skin. There are 2 main types.

1. SARCOPTES. This mite is common in Hong Kong particularly in the summer. It is infectious to other dogs and may cause transient infections in humans which will clear as the dog improves. Treatment can either be a course of injections or mange wash.

2. DEMODEX. This is a more serious infection. It is normally present in small numbers in all dogs, but some young dogs fail to control the mite and develop a problem. It is thought to be due to immunosppression and this can make treatment difficult. It can take months to clear the infection, and in some cases it is not possible.
