Dante is a female Lesser Sulphur-Crested Cockatoo. She was found on the pavement in 2004 and brought into the clinic.
On examination and x-ray we found that she had a badly broken wing that had become seriously infected. Dr Alex performed a complicated surgery to try and repair the broken bones but unfortunately the damage was too severe and the wing had to be amputated.
She climbs about well in her specially designed cage and she hardly ever falls off her perch. So far she can only say "Hello" but we are hoping to teach her to say " I like bananas" soon.
Dante spends her days on a specially designed perch on the upstairs level of the clinic where she gets to say hello and good bye to staff and clients visiting. She has her own schedule of toys and activities for each day and every day of the week. As parrots are very intelligent and get bored easily the toys/activities are change every 2 hours. These include activities such as foraging for food and shredding giving Dante a chance to show normal parrot behavior therefore preventing boredom and boredom related problems.
Dante has sadly started to develop a cataract in her right eye causing gradual loss of vision on that side. However she seems to be coping well with the change by altering the position of her head when looking at things and moving on her perch more carefully. We all have to remember not to approach her too quickly from her right side to prevent scaring her. |
